activities and

events

'No man (nor woman) is an island' is how we view our activities. It is important for you to connect with your fellow classmates and experience Sydney with your new friends. The easiest way to do this is to join us and them on some of the great activities that you can indulge in whilst staying in beautiful Sydney.

For our Certificate IV in TESOL students, it is an opportunity to unwind and recharge the batteries, given that your course is quite intensive. For our language school students, there is no better way to improve than to use the language when you are out and about. It is also a chance to make great friends whilst doing something awesome and so very different from what you do back home, whether it is learning to surf, going to a cricket match or bushwalking on Sydney Harbour or in the national parks that surround the city. For our intensive course participants, the same applies.

Many of our activities are free or very cheap, and all will afford you a great opportunity to make friends, engage in something unique and provide lasting memories of your special time in Sydney; a time you have invested considerable time and money into.

Some of our regular free or cheap activities include:

  • bush walks

  • BBQs at the beach (there are over 100 beaches in Sydney and most have free BBQs)

  • city walks or group fitness classes

  • group yoga

  • excursions to the zoo or attractions around Sydney

  • surfing

  • paddle-boarding

  • snorkling

  • golf

  • football; touch football (rugby with no tackling); football cricket and other team sports

Other activities that will cost a little money include:

  • surf camp

  • group excursions to the Blue Mountains, Port Stephens, or Canberra

  • skydiving

  • scuba-diving

  • paint-ball

  • attending cricket, rugby, rugby league, soccer and Australian Football matches

We have an activities coordinator who is constantly on the look-out for fun, inclusive and inexpensive activities for you to build connections and to help you love your time in Sydney and help with your study goals.

Below is some information about some of our most popular activities, many of which are (or should be) on students' bucket lists:

surf camp australia:

We use Surf Camp Australia for our group's surfing expeditions. They run 2 day and 3 day surf camps every weekend, even in winter (checkout the video below for one in winter). They pick us up from the city in their bus and drive us to their camp at seven mile beach a couple of hours south of Sydney. Everything is included in your price (accommodation, food, wet-suits, boards, videos, photos...) and everyone comes away from the weekend having stood up on a board surfing waves. It is a real joy to see our students arriving at school (sometimes a little late) after a surf, or heading off with their boards after school in the weeks and months after a camp. The school has a couple of boards also which students can borrow.

Check out the video from the camp in June 2018

golf days

There are lots of golf courses in Sydney, most of them public courses (owned by the local government) and so they are relaxed, inclusive, friendly, cheap and without restrictions like dress regulations or the need for a (registration) card. We know that golf is an exclusive and elitist sport in other countries, and most people don't get the chance to play it often, or at all, but golf is very different in Australia.

We get out onto the course every few weeks. We've played at many of the beautiful, open, unique courses in Sydney. Many of them are on the water and some have kangaroos hopping about. One of our favourites is Randwick Golf Club at Malabar. We hire clubs and play 9 or 18 holes for the price of a few beers. (We usually have lunch there as well and perhaps a beverage or two). Golf at such a beautiful course is a great way to socialise and develop your language. Its a great insight into Austalian culture and a great way to learn to play golf (probably in a much cheaper and more fun way than back home) and use it to build relationships through communication.

vivid tours

For a few weeks at the end of May and into June, Sydney comes alive at night with artistic colour. There are exhibitions featuring light in the city and in some of the major suburbs. We do walking tours of the events, tied to learning activities for general English, and using the event as a case study for our business and professional design and media modules.

The students love it and learn a lot through it. It is just one example of the old maxim that just about anything in your environment can be used as a learning tool. It just takes some creativity and preparation.
